EuroVélo Biking Trail Network

I am often asked how I plan my cycling journeys... The answer is simple: I use the EuroVélo trail network of the European Cyclists' Federation as my navigation backbone. With its 45,000 km (that will eventually become 90,000 km) over 19 trails across the continent, it is the most extensive and best developed cycling network in the world!

Local cycling trails complement the EuroVélo Network

When planning my trip from Geneva (Switzerland) to reach the Iron Curtain Trail (#EV13) in Vienna (Austria) and Bratislava (Slovakia) I took the famous Grande Traversée du Jura (#GTJ) with its magnificent landscapes, dedicated biking trails and roads with little to no traffic. The entire GTJ makes for a 377 km ride with 4,900 meters of vertical climbing.

I then descended from the Jura GTJ train onto Basel from where I reached the source of the Danube in Donaueschingen. I then followed the #EV6 Atlantic-Black Sea Route along the Danube until Vienna. The next post will expand on my Grande Traversée du Jura from Geneva to Basel and onwards to the source of the Donau as part of my warm-up for the Iron Curtain Trail to attend the 35th anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall on Nov 9, 2024. Stay tuned!
