Every journey has a start line. Mine began here in Aigle, Switzerland, at the UCI World Cycling Centre — the home of cycling’s rules, champions, and dreams.

Launching from the UCI felt symbolic. Cycling is not only sport: it is also a language of resilience, freedom, and unity. In this anniversary year — 45 years of Solidarność and 40 years since the Geneva Summit — I wanted my ride to echo those values, tracing roads that connect history, memory, and hope.

The velodrome was the perfect launch pad: a place where riders from all over the world come to test themselves against steep banks and the limits of speed. For me, it was a reminder that every pedal stroke carries both effort and meaning.

From here, the road stretched south through the Rhône Valley, Italy, Albania, and finally to Greece — ending at Olympia, cradle of the Games, and Mount Olympus, home of the gods.

Day One: done. Tomorrow, the Olympic spirit in Lausanne.

Here at @kinoilluzjon in Warsaw — the city where I was born — I sat down to plan a cycling adventure linking Switzerland 🇨🇭 to Greece 🇬🇷.

Warsaw is also where my story begins. During the Cold War, my parents and I left Poland to build a life in Canada 🍁, far from communism. I grew up in the free world — a freedom that today we sometimes take for granted, but which was hard won through courage, endurance, and solidarity.

This year marks two anniversaries that shaped our era:

More seriously — Koniuszewski, comes from the Polish word koń, meaning “horse” and is tied to Poland’s history and heritage, from the glory days of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth to the traditions of the cavalry.

That tradition even crossed the Atlantic: General Tadeusz Kościuszko and General Casimir Pulaski — two Polish heroes of liberty — helped shape the cavalry of the American Revolution. Pulaski and his cavalry saved George Washington’s life, a moment that tipped the scales toward the Revolution’s victory. 🐎🇵🇱🇺🇸

The photo may be lighthearted, it also connects to a much longer story — one of resilience, courage, and the spirit of freedom - and the enduring friendship between America and Poland!

After years of bike packing and adventure rides, this return to the world of cyclosportives reminded me why I love these big events: the atmosphere, the challenge, the community.

The Tour des Stations Superfondo was everything I hoped for and more: the drama of a pre-dawn start, endless climbs and switchbacks, and the final push at altitude. This finisher’s medal means more than just distance and elevation — it’s a symbol of resilience, joy, and the coronation ride of my season. 🚴‍♂️💥

After years of bike packing and riding for the sheer joy of adventure, I set myself a new challenge: to return to the atmosphere of the big cyclosportive events.

The Tour des Stations was everything: the drama of a pre-dawn start, endless climbs and switchbacks, and the final push at altitude. More than an event, it was a test of endurance and resilience — and a reminder that passion can carry you to the summit.

🌍 Cycling connects landscapes, history, and people. For me, this ride wasn’t just about watts and gradients, but about rediscovering the thrill of being part of something bigger, and writing the next chapter of my cycling story.

Thank you Alice for stopping… I was about to make a terrible mistake 😉… Coffee and Lemon don’t mix… of course :) The ice cream was great and the cup of coffee after as well!

First stop in Les Verrières in the Val de Travers, on the Swiss side of the French border after a challenging first day of riding from Geneva on the #GTJ with several demanding climbs. Here is where in 1870, 87 000 “Bourbakis”, Napoleon army soldiers under the command of General Bourbaki, were saved from certain death as they escaped the Prussian forces by crossing the border into neutral Switzerland. This was the first major success of the Red cross and a big step in establishing the Swiss tradition of international solidarity, humanitarian engagement and neutrality that we still have today.

Interesting fact: many “Bourbaki” were of Algerian origin.

First stop in Les Verrières in the Val de Travers, on the Swiss side of the French border after a challenging first day of riding from Geneva on the #GTJ with several demanding climbs. Here is where in 1870, 87 000 “Bourbakis”, Napoleon army soldiers under the command of General Bourbaki, were saved from certain death as they escaped the Prussian forces by crossing the border into neutral Switzerland. This was the first major success of the Red cross and a big step in establishing the Swiss tradition of international solidarity, humanitarian engagement and neutrality that we still have today.

Interesting fact: many “Bourbaki” were of Algerian origin.

Great view of #Geneva from “Col de la Combe Blanche”, a great alternative to the Col de la Faucille that most cyclists take. No cars and lots of wildlife - I usually encounter deer on my way including this time. Am just starting my tour of Europe by riding the Grande Traversée du Jura in Switzerland and France. I will later descending on Basel, catch the #Eurovelo6 Danube Cycleway from the source of the Danube in Germany and to Vienna, Austria to catch the #EV13 Iron Curtain Trail in #Bratislava.
