An interesting start today, with severe weather warnings I waited until for the rain to stop a bit and had a small window around 9am. Shortly after it started pouring down on me. Some road workers found shelter under a roof and cheered me as I passed-by... Not too many opportunities for pictures. When I saw a sign to Zadar I remembered when Fredrik asked if I would provide a review of the city... This is when I was glad to change my plans and headed towards this Croatian tourist hotspot on the Dalmatian Coast. By the time I arrived it was nice, sunny and warm!
ZADAR
Starigrad to Zadar
In Zadar we find Roman and Venetian ruins in the peninsular old town that is surrounded by city walls with several entry gates. There are plenty of caffés, amazing restaurants and gelato counters to enjoy. The tourist office provides maps and tips on everything there is to see through a walking tour that takes about two hours (see video feature). It is not surprising that Zadar is a tourist favorite which The Guardian described as the "Croatian new capital of cool!"
I can imagine that this place is packed with tourists during the summer but at this time it is nice and relaxing, accomodation is easy to find and for cyclists there is a safe cycling path along the seacoast going south all the way to Split (about 140km away). We will check this tomorrow!
